Aidan Morris ended a long personal drought to secure a point for Middlesbrough in a 1-1 Championship draw at Burnley on Wednesday night. The American midfielder's first-half strike was cancelled out by Burnley's Ugo Raghouber in a match that saw Boro move to 5th in the league with 7 points from their opening four games.
Kim Hellberg's side took the lead in the 23rd minute at Turf Moor. Sebastian Berhalter, another of the four Americans in the Boro squad, set up Morris who finally broke his scoring duck after more than two years with the club. The travelling supporters celebrated with chants of 'USA, USA'.
How did Middlesbrough perform overall?
Head coach Kim Hellberg was clear in his assessment after the game. "We were the better team from my point of view and controlled things, playing good football," he told reporters. His team had chances to extend their lead before the break. Morris almost grabbed a second just before half-time after a loose clearance from Connor Roberts, and Riley McGree steered a cross wide from six yards.
Goalkeeper Radek Vitek was busy early on, making a save in the third minute to deny Will Lankshear, Boro's leading scorer. The keeper was later involved in a flashpoint, showing anger after being caught by Burnley's Chelsea loanee Dastan Satpayev while chasing a back pass. Lankshear was also booked for treading on Hannibal Mejbri's foot.
What changed after half-time?
Burnley, managed by Nicky Hayen, improved after the interval. Hayen admitted his team started with good intentions but felt fear after conceding. "We started with good intentions in the first 10 minutes." he said. The equaliser came in the 54th minute. Zeki Amdouni provided the pass for French midfielder Ugo Raghouber, a summer signing from Lille, to fire home.
The Clarets had to rethink their attack after selling Zian Flemming to Ipswich for £20 million on deadline day. Andreas Hountondji was brought in on loan and made his first start since November 2024 after a season and a half out on loan. Satpayev, making his home debut, created a chance after exchanging passes with Amdouni.
Where does this leave Middlesbrough?
The draw means Middlesbrough remain firmly in the early playoff mix, sitting 5th in the Championship. They have taken 7 points from a possible 12, with a record of two wins, one draw, and one loss. Their goal difference stands at +2, having scored 7 and conceded 5 so far this season. They are currently three points behind league leaders Swansea City.
Hellberg acknowledged his team is still developing. He said they controlled the game and created chances but were not always good enough in possession. The performance, he felt, was a big step forward in how Middlesbrough want to play as they continue to build up players returning from injury. One player currently sidelined is Jeremy Sarmiento, whose absence is noted on the club's injuries page.
What is next for Boro?
Attention now turns quickly to the next Championship fixture. Middlesbrough face a tough test away to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, September 5th. QPR currently sit 2nd in the table, making it a significant early-season encounter. Fans can check the full schedule on the club's fixtures page. The team's current league position can be tracked via the standings.
Aaron Ramsey fired wide as a late substitute for Burnley with 12 minutes left, but Boro held on for a point. Centre-back Alfie Jones and the rest of the defence worked to contain Burnley's response after the equaliser. The result provides a platform ahead of the trip to Loftus Road.
