Middlesbrough have signed goalkeeper Radek Vitek and striker Will Lankshear, two players described as "dream" transfers by club officials. The signings come after the play-off final, when Boro officials reviewed where the team fell short and identified the need for improvement in both the goalkeeping and striking departments.
Key Signings
Vitek and Lankshear were the top two priority targets at the start of the summer window. Their arrival is seen as a direct response to the club’s ambition to become a credible Championship promotion challenger. In addition to the two stars, Middlesbrough have also added centre-back Ashley Phillips, whose profile mirrors that of Vitek and Lankshear in terms of quality and potential.
The club’s recruitment has not stopped at the core positions. Two USA internationals have joined the squad, joining fellow American Aidan Morris. These signings bring experience from both the MLS and the Championship, and the club believes there is room for growth in the players’ ages.
Middlesbrough still aim to strengthen further before the window closes on September 1. The club is looking for one more midfielder and a winger or wide forward, while also seeking to avoid losing any key players they wish to keep.
MLS Scouting Continues
Middlesbrough’s interest in the MLS has grown over the past two years, with four signings from the league now on the books. The club’s head of football, Kieran Scott, highlighted the success of Aidan Morris and Adilson Malanda in a recent YouTube documentary series titled "Forged in the USA". He noted that the positive impact of these players has opened the market for Boro and that the MLS remains a league they continue to watch closely.
Scott added, "We’ve had some success with Aidan and then obviously more recently Malanda too. I think the success of that - bringing the players here and how well they’ve done - has opened the market for us. It’s a market we continue to watch, like we watch a lot of leagues. But certainly in the MLS, I think there’s a lot of good profiles there."
The club’s database now contains many more MLS-based players, and while there are unlikely to be any further arrivals across the Atlantic this summer, the potential for future signings remains high.
Middlesbrough’s summer transfer window has already been described as "mightily impressive" and "the club’s best window in history" by some officials. With the addition of Vitek, Lankshear, Phillips, and the two USA internationals, the squad depth and quality have been significantly improved, setting the stage for a strong campaign in the Championship.
