Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg has declared his squad will be stronger and packed with greater potential when the new Championship season begins, following an ambitious summer of recruitment.
What has changed at Middlesbrough?
Boro have already completed five summer signings and are closing in on two more, with deals agreed for Manchester United’s Radek Vitek and Tottenham’s Ashley Phillips. The club, who finished 5th in the Championship last season with 80 points (22W-14D-10L), scored 72 goals and conceded 47, ending 15 points behind leaders Coventry. Their recent form saw them lose three of their last five matches, including a 1-0 defeat to Hull City on May 23, 2026.
Why is Hellberg confident?
Hellberg highlighted the loss of key players like Hayden Hackney, who joined Everton, but stressed the new arrivals-all aged 25 or younger-bring fresh talent and ambition. “We’ve got very, very good, talented players in,” he said. “They want to come here to develop, and that makes me very happy.” The squad’s potential and work ethic have raised hopes of a promotion push.
What’s next for Boro?
Hellberg confirmed Middlesbrough are still pursuing a winger and possibly a midfielder before the transfer window closes. With injured players set to return, he believes the group is nearing his ideal shape. “It’s getting closer to a very talented squad,” he added. Boro’s campaign kicks off with a Carabao Cup clash against Wrexham on Friday evening.
