Middlesbrough striker Layton Campbell has joined National League side Kidderminster Harriers on a short-term loan until January. The 20-year-old forward will be joined at Aggborough by Sam Austin, who returns to the club on a separate loan until the end of the season.
Campbell arrives after scoring 15 goals in 16 games for non-league Whitley Bay before signing for Middlesbrough last season. The move provides the young attacker with a chance for regular senior football. Austin, 29, left Kidderminster after six seasons to join Notts County in 2023, helping them win promotion back to the EFL, before a move to Southend United last summer.
Harriers face Doncaster in FA Cup
The signings come ahead of a key FA Cup first round tie this Saturday. Kidderminster will host League Two side Doncaster Rovers at Aggborough, with kick-off at 15:00 GMT. The club's only victory in their last eight matches across all competitions was a 2-1 win over Solihull Moors in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round, a result they will hope to build upon.
Kidderminster currently sit 13th in the National League table, having failed to win any of their last eight league fixtures.
For Middlesbrough, the loan allows Campbell to gain valuable experience while the first team continues its strong Championship campaign. Boro sit top of the league with 28 points from 14 games, holding a one-point lead at the summit. Their next fixture is a trip to face Watford on Saturday, 7 November, as they look to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at Wrexham last time out. The team's record of eight wins, four draws, and two losses has them one point clear of Wolves. Their recent form of three wins, one draw, and one loss in the last five games includes the 2-0 loss at Wrexham on Wednesday, 4 November, where goals from George Thomason and Oliver Rathbone settled the match. Prior to that, they had beaten Charlton 3-0 on Saturday, 31 October, with Will Lankshear scoring twice to add to his season tally. Lankshear is the team's top scorer this season with 13 goals in 13 appearances. Middlesbrough have scored 30 goals and conceded 19, giving them a goal difference of plus 11. Their strong start provides a stable backdrop for allowing young players like Campbell to develop elsewhere.
