Middlesbrough have confirmed the sacking of former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick as their manager. Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in October 2022, in what was his first role in management. He steered Boro to a play-off finish in the 2022/23 season, but the club has fallen short of the top six in each of the two campaigns since. The club issued a statement that read, “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.” Michael Carrick's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club. Middlesbrough finished in 10th place in the Championship standings in the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign. According to Sky Sports, Carrick met with Middlesbrough on Wednesday, including owner Steve Gibson, where his fate was decided. The 43-year-old remains a popular figure at Middlesbrough despite his dismissal. Carrick's exit means that 17 of the 24 Championship clubs from last season have now undergone managerial changes since August. Carrick retired from professional football at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, having made 464 appearances for Manchester United. He scored 24 goals for the Red Devils. The club will be making no further comment at this stage. Middlesbrough's decision to part ways with Carrick was likely due to the club's disappointing finish in the Championship standings. The club's owner Steve Gibson was involved in the decision to sack Carrick. Middlesbrough will now begin their search for a new manager to take over the club.
