Middlesbrough have reportedly hit a significant roadblock in their pursuit of Swedish talent Victor Eriksson due to recent stringent changes in UK work visa legislation. Despite the interest from the Boro side, the transfer appears to be impossible under the current window as the player struggles to meet Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) requirements.
The 25-year-old midfielder is a familiar face to Middlesbrough current boss Kim Hellberg, who previously managed the player during his time at both Varnamo and Hammarby. However, the administrative landscape of English football has shifted significantly. The new GBE rules, which came into effect in June, now require players to accumulate 15 points to secure a permit to play in the Championship. Eriksson is currently projected to earn only 7 points, leaving him well short of the threshold.
While exceptional circumstances can be considered for players earning between 10 and 14 points, the barrier remains high. Championship clubs can only sign up to four players who do not meet the points criteria, provided they are under U23 and born after January 1, 2003. At 25 years old, Eriksson does not qualify for this specific youth-based exemption.
According to a report from Teesside Live, the player has been asked about the move again, but the situation remains stagnant. When questioned about direct interest, Eriksson stated: "No [contact], not that I know of anyway." Regarding his future and potential move to Teesside, the midfielder added: "I think I’ll stay."
Middlesbrough have been active in the market this summer, though their focus has shifted slightly to other areas. The club has already secured Ashley Phillips at the centre-back position and is reportedly working to bring in experienced veteran Sam Byram at full-back. Despite these additions, the priorities remain a central midfielder and a wide forward to bolster the squad depth.
The situation comes at a challenging time for the club as they look to build on their previous campaign. The league standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 5th in Championship, 80 pts, 22W-14D-10L from 46 games, recent form LLDDW. The club finished the last season on a low note with a Hull City 1-0 Middlesbrough (2026-05-23), leaving them 15 points behind leaders Coventry.
Eriksson proved his durability last season, featuring in 82% of all Hammarby's league games. However, with the visa rules proving so restrictive, Hellberg will likely have to look for alternatives in the midfield market as the window draws close.
