Middlesbrough have signed 32-year-old former Leeds United defender Sam Byram on a free transfer, completing the club’s ninth summer signing. The ex-Canary has agreed a one-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, arriving to offer cover on both the right and left full-back positions.
Arrival at the Riverside
Byram’s move to the Riverside comes after a successful promotion campaign with Leeds United in 2024-25, where he made 36 appearances in the Championship. He has amassed 220 Championship appearances over his career and over 60 Premier League appearances, although only one came last season as he was limited to four cup appearances for Daniel Farke’s side.
Leeds had shown interest in extending his contract at the end of last season, but Byram was keen to move on to a club where he could play regularly. Norwich City were also said to have interest in re-signing him, yet Middlesbrough won the race, aided by the fact that both head of football Kieran Scott and head of recruitment Chris Jones were at Norwich during Byram’s four-year spell.
Experience for a Young Squad
Byram said after signing: “I’m buzzing to be here. It’s a club I know well from playing against them over many seasons, so I’m very familiar with the place and delighted to be here. It’s a great club and a big club, and one that I’m really happy to be part of. I’ve been around this league for a number of years and had a couple of promotions in that time, so I know what it takes. It’s an incredibly tough league and a long season, but it’s a great squad and great group. If I can add a bit of experience and a bit of quality, that’s what I’m here to do.”
He added on Leeds United’s official podcast that he still feels he has a few years ahead of him and wants to play regularly, citing a period of injuries that left him on the sidelines. “I’d like to play regularly if I can. It’s something off the back of before coming here; I had a lot of years on the sideline with injuries. So, I think for me to get myself in a position where it’s the best I’ve felt physically, I think that’s something I really want to fulfil and play as much as I can.”
Contract Details
The one-year contract includes an option for a further 12 months, giving Middlesbrough flexibility as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the upcoming season. Byram’s arrival provides the club with a versatile full-back who can cover both sides, adding depth and experience to a squad that has already brought in eight other players during the summer.
