Tommy Conway’s comeback from a devastating injury has revitalised Middlesbrough’s season. The forward set up two goals in a 4-3 win over Norwich City last weekend, securing the club's fourth victory of the campaign and helping them climb to third in the Championship table with 14 points from seven games.
Conway suffered a serious injury in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi-final last season, requiring surgery and ending his hopes of playing at Wembley. The setback also saw him miss selection for Scotland’s World Cup squad. Four months later, his return to the pitch proved decisive against Norwich.
"It was the toughest part of my career, 100% mentally, missing the Play-Off Final and missing the World Cup," Conway said. His two assists came early in the match, first for Sebastian Berhalter’s fourth-minute equaliser and then for Amario Cozier-Duberry’s goal three minutes later that put Boro ahead for good.
From Bristol to Boro
The 24-year-old began his football journey at age seven in the Bristol City academy, where he spent 14 years before moving on. He signed his scholarship at 15 and played as a traditional number nine for the Robins. His move to Middlesbrough coincided with the arrival of manager Kim Hellberg at the Riverside Stadium in November 2025, a change that has transformed his game.
Under Hellberg, Conway has developed into a more flexible attacker, often playing effectively from a wide left position. He feels this shift has taken his performance to a new level. "I see myself within the people up here," Conway said of the Teesside supporters. "They’re so similar to me and my family, and how I grew up."
His pride in representing the club is matched by a desire to repay the faith shown in him during his rehabilitation. The win over Norwich was a perfect example, with Berhalter adding a second and Ashley Phillips scoring a late winner to seal a 4-3 result after a Norwich fightback.
Boro's current form
That victory forms part of a solid start for Hellberg’s side, who have lost just once in their last five outings. The sequence reads two wins, two draws and one defeat. They followed the Norwich win with a 2-2 draw at home to Millwall, where Will Lankshear and Cozier-Duberry were on target. Lankshear is the team’s top scorer this season with six goals in seven appearances.
With 14 goals scored and 10 conceded, Boro hold a positive goal difference as they prepare for their next challenge. They travel to face Birmingham City, who sit 10th, this Saturday.
The comeback of Tommy Conway provides a significant boost for Middlesbrough’s promotion ambitions. His adaptability and direct contributions are now key assets for Kim Hellberg as the season progresses.
