Middlesbrough face a decision over whether to pursue Manchester City youngster Divin Mubama this summer or allow Derby County to take him on loan instead. Kim Hellberg’s side sit fifth in the Championship with 80 points from 46 games, and they need a proven goalscorer to push for automatic promotion.
Why Mubama isn’t the answer
Divin Mubama joined City in summer 2024 after 12 first-team games for West Ham. Last season’s loan spell at Stoke brought five goals in 26 Championship games for a struggling Potters side, but his output was inconsistent. Middlesbrough already have Kyle Joseph from Hull City, but Hellberg needs more firepower up front after selling Hayden Hackney.
Mubama’s record—one goal in two senior City appearances—doesn’t scream title-challenger quality. With Morgan Whittaker (14 goals) and others contributing just five more last term, Boro need a striker who can deliver 19 goals alone, not chip in occasionally.
The Derby County alternative
Reports suggest both Middlesbrough and Derby are after Mubama, but Hellberg’s side should prioritise title credentials. Derby, closer to mid-table last season, can offer the youngster regular football without derailing Boro’s push. Mubama may develop, but Middlesbrough need a guaranteed goal threat now.
What Middlesbrough’s summer must focus on
Hellberg’s side pushed to the top as late as mid-February before fading to fifth, then lost the play-off final to Hull City on 2026-05-23. Their recent form—four straight losses—shows why a proven finisher is vital. With Coventry 15 points clear and just 72 goals scored, Boro can’t afford another season relying on Strelec and Conway, who managed 19 goals combined last term.
Next up is a pre-season clash with Espanyol at the Riverside on 2026-08-01. Hellberg’s window to reshape the attack starts now.
